Hosting backup is like insurance. When everything works, it is easy to ignore. When an update breaks the site, someone deletes files or WordPress gets infected, a backup can save the project.

How often should backups run?
For most websites, the safest standard is a backup every 24 hours. For company websites, blogs and small stores, daily backup provides a reasonable balance between safety and cost.
If the website rarely changes, a backup every few days may be enough. If you run an online store, booking system or user accounts, consider more frequent backups or additional database protection.
What should a backup include?
A full backup should include files and databases. In WordPress, files include themes, plugins and media, but posts, pages, settings and WooCommerce products are stored in the database.
A file-only backup is not enough to fully restore a website. A database-only backup is also incomplete if images and application files are missing.
How long should backups be stored?
Retention is as important as frequency. If you notice an infection only after several days, yesterday's backup may already contain the problem.
For a business website, several restore points are a practical minimum. A backup history from the last 7, 14 or 30 days is better.
Where should backups be stored?
Ideally, backups should be stored outside the main website environment. A backup saved only inside the WordPress folder may disappear with the damaged site or consume hosting space.
Ask whether backups are separated from the hosting account and whether you can restore them yourself.
When is backup especially important?
Backup should always be available, but it is especially important before:
- WordPress updates,
- plugin and theme updates,
- major website changes,
- migration,
- store or form deployments.
Before a major change, create an additional manual backup or make sure the latest automatic backup is current.
Is backup enough for security?
No. Backup lets you return to an earlier state, but it does not remove the cause of the problem. If a vulnerable plugin caused an infection, restoring a backup without updating may lead to another infection.
Backups should work together with updates, strong passwords, SSL, antivirus protection and monitoring.
Summary
For most websites, a good minimum is daily backup of files and databases, stored for several days or weeks. Fast restore is just as important.
