My IP address – frequently asked questions

What is an IP address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol) is a unique number assigned to a device connected to the internet. It can be compared to a home address—just as a postal address allows a courier to deliver a package to the right place, an IP address enables data to be sent between devices on a network. Without it, browsing websites, using email, or communicating online would not be possible.
Why should I know my IP address?
Your IP address is useful for diagnosing network issues, configuring a server, ensuring online security, and adjusting access settings for internet services.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 is the older and more widely used version of the Internet Protocol, utilizing 32-bit addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1). This system allows for approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses, which has led to address exhaustion due to the rapid growth of internet-connected devices. IPv6 was introduced to address this limitation by using 128-bit addresses (e.g., 2001:db8::ff00:42:8329), significantly increasing the number of available addresses. This newer protocol also improves network security, enhances routing efficiency, and supports better performance for modern internet services. While many networks still rely on IPv4, the adoption of IPv6 is steadily increasing as organizations transition to the newer standard.
How can I check my IP address?
You can check your IP address using the earlier section on this page.
Is my IP address static?
That depends on your internet service provider. A dynamic IP address can change with each reconnection to the network or periodically over time. A static IP address, on the other hand, is permanently assigned and does not change.
Can my IP address reveal my location?
Yes, but only approximately. Your IP address can indicate the city or region you are in, but it does not reveal your exact home address.
Why is my IP address blocked?
A block may occur due to a violation of a website’s terms of service, suspicious activity, or anti-spam measures. If your IP address has been blocked and you cannot access a service, contact our technical support for verification.
Can multiple people have the same IP address?
Yes, in local networks, multiple devices (e.g., computers, phones, smart TVs) can share the same public IP address if they are connected to the same router. However, on the internet, all outgoing connections appear under the same shared address, which may affect access to certain services.
